Grand Theft auto 5

Scottish newspaper The Scotsman is reporting that Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto V is the most expensive video game production in history.  The report states that the game was created on a combined development and marketing budget of £170 million ($265 million) making it more expensive than most big-budget Hollywood blockbusters.  In fact, the game’s budget is only behind Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End which is the current record holder ($300 million budget) for the most expensive film production ever.

With game development budgets spiraling out of control, the gap between film budgets and game budgets seems to be slowly narrowing.  Luckily, preorders already reaching over 2.5 million means Rockstar shouldn’t have too much trouble breaking even on those costs.

Grand Theft Auto V will be releasing next week on the 17th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation.
