SteamOS

Valve has announced plans to bring out a new operating system called SteamOS, which is built around Linux architecture and Steam itself.

According to Valve’s site, “You don’t have to give up your favorite games, your online friends, and all the Steam features you love just to play on the big screen. SteamOS, running on any living room machine, will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available.”

Valve posted four main selling points about SteamOS.

  • Family Sharing: Multiple people can take turns playing games within a single Steam account while earning achievements and saving progress to the cloud
  • In-Home Streaming: Any machine or device that runs the SteamOS can stream games running on your existing computer to your TV
  • Media Services: Valve says it’s working with media service companies so you can listen to music and watch films over Steam and SteamOS.”
  • Family Options: Sounds like parental controls are on the way.

Valve says more announcements are on the way, and hundreds of games are already running natively on SteamOS.  They promise more announcements in the coming weeks to show off AAA titles coming to Steam OS in 2014.
