Microsoft will provide a free add-on in 2014 which allows registered indie developers to publish Unity games on Xbox One and Windows 8. Unity-Pro licenses will also be offered to Xbox One developers for free.

“Microsoft continues to show their commitment to creating opportunity for developers of all shapes and sizes, a commitment shared by Unity,” Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason said. “The drive behind the ID@Xbox program is exciting for Unity and the games development community in general. We can’t wait to see the results.”

Free Unity licenses is something that Nintendo already offers with Wii U, so it’s good to see other console makers finally jumping on board with this idea.

Microsoft is hoping that the ID@Xbox Program will make publishing indie games easier on Xbox One than Xbox 360.
